Veil of Darkness by Derek Adams.jpg

By Derek Adams

This is the first book in the Veil of Darkness Series.

There’s a world just beyond the veil… in the dark, out of sight, and out of reach for most. That is where they live.

Spirits, demons, and creatures of myth.

For decades, one organization has sought to uncover the secrets of harnessing the power on the other side of the veil for its own misdeeds.

And for decades, a group devoted to protecting life and the natural order has worked to counter the efforts of evil.

Emma is the perfect guardian, living in isolation until called on, accompanied by a tenacious Siberian husky bonded as her familiar and companion. Her life and existence is devoted to one end – using her unique abilities to maintain the balance and bring an end to that which does not belong.

Luca is a paranormal expert capable of seeing beyond the veil and communicating with the other side. With his spirit companions, Sutter and Virgil, he’s called on to investigate an unusual event that will forever change him, and the small border town he once called home.

After a chance encounter, Luca will awaken something in Emma that will force her to face her most difficult struggles, and inspire a whole new reason to fight.

Emma is an immortal huntress of the evil spirits that go bump in the night. Together with her dog Bella they keep away the evil paranormal spirits and demons that shouldn’t be here away.

Luca is a scholar of all things paranormal. Not only does he study the paranormal, he can also talk to it. Sutter and Virgil are his spirit companions that tag along to help, and sometimes provide comedic relief.

When Luca’s receives a call from the sheriff of his hometown, the paranormal activity he finds in the cabins by the lake includes a sexy paranormal mercenary. With all the gifts of this rag tag team the force that is coming is stronger than they’ve experienced before in this paranormal romance that is only the beginning.

April’s Review:

I’ve never read much Paranormal Romance. It’s not because I’m not interested. It’s mostly just because no one has ever raved about a PNR book as loudly as they do for say...rom-com.

I have to admit, I did have some preconceived notions about the genre. I expected there to be chapters upon chapters of explanation of this new and different world (something similar to what one might find in sci-fi). What I wasn’t expecting were the emotional moments. Just these perfect moments, where if the house had been quiet and there weren’t people around there just might, maybe, possibly, there could have been tears. One thing I was hoping for from my first PNR was a little more R. Maybe even a little p in a v.

I loved the spirits Sutter and Virgil. They are both great characters that add so much depth to the story. They provide the heart and the comedic relief.

For my first PNR, I will say this was a good showing. Adams is a talented writer whose descriptions paint a clear picture leaving room for interpretation, but not doubt. I look forward to more adventures that happen through the Veil of Darkness.

Aracely’s Review:

This is the first book I’ve read by Derek Adams. I’ve read very few book written by men because very few men write romance. But I was willing to give Derek Adams a shot.

The storyline was gripping and really caught my attention. I am a paranormal romance junkie and really got invested in Luca and Emma journey. What impressed me the most was the amazing job he did with the supporting character Sutter and Virgil. These two supporting characters I felt rounded out the story and were very enjoyable in the story.

Now here is my beef, Veil of Darkness is really heavy on the paranormal part but very low on the romance part. I excepted a little more from Luca and Emma. I felt that there was this big build and then bang nothing. I don’t know if this was done because this is only book one and he is going to build up to more or if he wanted to focus more on the paranormal part of it.

Overall I did enjoy reading Veil of Darkness, it was well written and captivating but wished there was a little more going on with Luca and Emma. I look forward to the next two books to see how their story continues.

Why did we choose this book:

I encountered Derek around the book social media community. I heard about Derek from Lee with I Read Him First book blog. Shortly after he was initiated into the R&E Fraternity. He has a great brand and a great personality.

Also, Aracely is a fan of PNR, and I’ve been bogarting her reading list with lots of romantic suspense and rom-coms, so I urged her to read Veil of Darkness too.

Who should read this book:

If you’re in the mood for PNR with a little emotion and just a hint of steam this is the book for you.

About the Author:

Derek is a retired Emergency Medical Professional and has been a lover of telling stories his entire life, having made the transition from “filthy liar” to “sexy author” about the same time silver hairs started showing up in his face (and other places.) Aside from being a published author and freelance writer he’s also a gamer, gym rat, snow hater (despite living in Michigan), life liver, stunt double for Hulk, and he considers himself to be aggressively unfancy.
